Beading Up Experiment and Question!

posted in: Let's Get Technical, Uncategorized | 0

I have been having issues with excessive beading up with some of my paintings. I did an experiment to see if I could narrow down a cause. I used Lead white (which I use), Burnt Umber (normally a paint that sinks in a lot) and Ultramarine Blue (a more oilier paint)

I was wondering if a less absorbant surface would change anything so the upper half of the experiment had some oil applied to the surface and let it dry. The lower half is just the plain panel.

I was suspicious about fussing with the paint making it worse, so I also tried direct application and fussy application to compare. Here it what it looked like before oiling in.

I also made a video about it on youtube so if you want to see in video, check this out.

After oiling in with JUST LINSEED OIL and a makeup sponge. The results:

The only mixtures with the problem were burnt umber mixed with white. (and also the one where I mixed everything together) White alone – no problem. Burnt umber alone – no problem. Any thoughts about what is going on????

The sinking in occurred more with the non-oil surface but the only one that was dramatic was the ultramarine fussy. No correlation to the beading up though.
